The old "multiply by 7" rule doesn't hold up — dogs mature quickly in their first two years, and after that, bigger dogs age faster than smaller ones. This calculator uses the size-class aging tables that veterinary organizations commonly publish.
These tables are a commonly used veterinary guideline, not precise science. Breed, genetics and health matter more than any chart. Two dogs of the same weight can age very differently.
How this is calculated
This uses the size-class aging table reproduced by many veterinary sources: the first dog year counts as about 15 human years, the second brings the total to about 24, and each year after that adds roughly 4–5 human years for small and medium dogs and more for large and giant breeds. Giant breeds start slightly slower but age fastest from year three on.
For ages between whole years, the calculator interpolates between the two nearest chart values. The chart itself runs to 16 dog years.
Common questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. That old rule ignores how fast dogs mature early on and how differently sizes age. A one-year-old dog is roughly a teenager, not a seven-year-old child.
Why do big dogs age faster?
It's a well-documented pattern — larger breeds have shorter average lifespans — but the reasons are still being researched. The tables reflect the observed pattern, not a full explanation.
My dog is a mix. Which size class do I pick?
Use adult weight: under 20 lb small, 21–50 lb medium, 51–90 lb large, over 90 lb giant. For a puppy, estimate the expected adult weight.
How accurate is this?
It's an approximation for intuition, not a health measurement. Vets increasingly look at individual markers (teeth, joints, bloodwork) rather than converted age. Use the number for perspective, not decisions.
